Kamakshi Kalyanasundaram - Carnatic Vocalist


Recognized as a child prodigy, Kamakshi could identify notes and ragas (melodies) at the age of 4. Eminent violinist Lalgudi Srimathi Brahmanandam (sister of the world renowned “Maestro” Lalgudi G. Jayaraman) spotted her extraordinary talent at a very young age. Kamakshi began her formal training in South Indian Classical music from the age of 6. She received her initial training in both instrumental (violin) and vocal music from Lalgudi Shrimati Brahmanandam and her own grandmother Smt. N. Seethalakshmi.

Kamakshi honed her skills further by studying with Shri O. S. Thyagarajan. Since 1998, she is receiving advanced training from “Padmabhushan” “Sangitha Kalanidhi” Madurai Shri T. N. Seshagopalan. Kamakshi has also undergone training on Western Classical and Jazz.

Having a natural flair and talent for creative music, Kamakshi has set tunes to some poems of Shri Subrahmaniya Bharathiyar.   

Kamakshi has earned her Masters degree (with a Gold Medal) in Computer Science from Anna University, India and Diploma in Recording Arts from The Hartford Conservatory, USA.


Kamakshi started giving concert performances at the age of 13 and she has over 20 years of performance experience. Sri Shanmukhananda Fine Arts, Bombay, The Music Academy(Spirit of Youth festival), Chennai, Thyagaraja Aradhana, Thiruvaiyaru, Narada Gana Sabha, Chennai, Indian Fine Arts society, Chennai, Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai, Nadasurabhi Cultural Association, Bangalore, Bharath Kalachar, Chennai, Gurukrupa Trust, Shiva Vishnu Temple, Florida, Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana festival, Cleveland are a few leading concert platforms in India and USA that Kamakshi has performed in.

She has also given thematic concerts in Muthiah Bhagavathar Krithis, Dasar Krithis, Dikshitar krithis and Namasankeerthanam. She has also performed concerts along with her Guru and with her brother (Violinist Shri S. Ramakrishnan).

Kamakshi’s proficiency in music has earned her several prizes, awards, and recognitions (a few are mentioned below).

·         Recipient of National Music Scholarship, awarded by Government of India (2003) for advanced study in Carnatic music

·         Graded B-High by the All India Radio

·         Recipient of the title “Ilam Isai Mamani” from Kalibhari Trust, Chennai (1999).

·         Recipient of the “M. S. Subhalakshmi Endowment Award” from Narada Gana Sabha (2007)

·         Awarded “Best Vocalist” by Sri Krishna Gana Sabha (2000), Indian Fine Arts Society (2005)

·         Very favorable concert reviews in leading National and Regional Newspapers in India (The Hindu, Trinity Mirror, Malai Malar)
